Melancholia - MATTHIAS THUROW

Melancholia

CrossCulture MusicMelancholia - MATTHIAS THUROW

"I was primarily interested in the musical representation of the polarisation which also determines the nature of melancholy. On the one hand sadness and grief, on the other power and ecstacy. Both sides linked by an indescribable beauty within the meaning of the phrase."

MELANCONIA MIA.

The musical elements which THUROW employs are just as diverse as his theme.

With his first LP "Cornucopia" (Erdenklang 942.162) he was still comparing the music computer to a paint box which produced ideals that had to be realised. Now, however, THUROW is already creating independent forms of artistic syntheses. Using the music computer innovatively, but with restraint, as the wish generator of new composition media, THUROW precisely accords with the philosophy of the ERDENKLANG label.

To describe him as the representative of a "popular avantgarde" of electronic instrumental music is just as correct as the realisation that descriptions of this kind can be only mere approximations. In a different way this also applies to a record which can, of course, capture only a part of that artistic work. But back to the musical content of THUROW´s new album. It reflects his inward search, in which he discovers more than from looking around him. And what he found rests in every one of us, whether recognised or still hidden. Drawing attention to this point is the merit of this album.
